frida kahlo has terrified me since sophmore year in high school. i mean terrified in both its figurative and literal meanings.
and the picture of "the two fridas" is double the terror.
i must be something in the unibrow. she suffered many hardships (as we all do) in her short life span.
her tragic bus accident that caused her to be skewered by a metal handrail that entered her hip and exited through her vagina.
her marriage to fellow painter diego rivera (who had serveral affairs during the course of their marriage--including her sister)
her self-portraits were brutally honest and exposed her pain.
it is her ability to look at herself and paint what she saw that keeps me intrigued.

... ouch. i've seen this painting before and it always drew me ... away. just so unattractive. never knew the history behind it. :/
although my favorite pieces are figural, something about Kahlo never captured my affection. Indeed her story is tragic and sheds light on the reality that painting, or any form of art for that matter, is an expressive outpouring of the soul.
